Daily Devotional - "Through the Eyes of a Cop"
Briefing: What kind of retirement do you have? Do you put back money into a savings account? Does your department provide a retirement system? I have paid into my police retirement for over twenty years now. There will come a time in my life where it will pay off and I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my life.
Dispatch (Assignment): Read Matthew 6:19-21 and 25:31-46.
On the Street: Are you the kind of person who saves up for a vacation or someone who spends the money as it comes in and enjoys life?
Jesus tells us to live life in a way that we work towards the goal of heaven. Paul gives the analogy of a runner who trains hard, not to be in shape but to win the race. His goal is not to compete, it's to win. It is an attitude and a focus not just an extracurricular activity.
This kind of living takes a total "buy in" commitment. It is like the kind of commitment a LEO makes when the moment of truth is staring him in the face. You arrive on the scene of an active shooter. You don't have time to wait for SWAT; you have to stop the threat! Take a deep breath, be sharp mentally, focus and dive in! As a Christian, this is how I envision my journey with Christ. I want to be "all in". No matter how bad it gets, I have to have the courage to move forward.
If we live this out, as Christians, we will be storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven. The things of this earth will burn. All of it will be gone, your favorite gun, your house and your boat. All of the things you have worked all your life for will be gone. All, except the things you did to benefit the kingdom of God.
Highlights from this Read: Where is your treasure? Another good way of asking this question is what do you look forward to? What do you spend your money on? When you have free time, what do you spend that time doing? This is where your treasure is.
This is a question of flesh versus spirit. It is a very common underlying theme throughout the Bible. An understanding of your flesh versus your spirit comes more into play the further your journey with Christ goes. It is essential to your Christian walk.
Investigational Resources: For other verses on how to live this life of storing up treasures in heaven, see Matthew 6:1-4, 7:15-27. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul talks about running the race. A companion story is found in Luke 11:34-36.
Officer Safety Principle: Christ desires to be the treasure of your heart. Pray to God and ask Him to reveal to you how this should look in your life, then act on it.
