I am often amazed, and sometimes amused, at the methods God uses to get our undivided attention.
As a young detective with two kids in school and a mortgage, I took advantage of our department’s “special employment” opportunities. We could work one or two days off a month working a uniform car in Chicago’s housing projects. Living on the north side, I would work Gabrini Green with another officer from any one of the 25 police districts. On one such shift the officer I was working with became aware of my being a believer in Jesus (long story, I’ll save it for another time). He proceeded to let me know that he was a believer too! This is what he shared with me:
He had been in a foot chase while holding a cocked 1911 and accidently shot himself. His injury was serious and, after hospitalization, he was released to go home with strict orders to remain in bed. One day his wife left the house to shop for groceries while Byron lay in bed watching reruns on TV. When the program ended, the 700 Club, hosted by Pat Robertson, came on. No remote. A captive audience. By the end of the program, Byron had surrendered his life to Christ.
Revelation 3:20 tells us that there is a time when Jesus will knock on our door. In Byron’s case, the Lord used extreme measures to insure that he would be home. Has he knocked on your door yet? It’s best if you answer the first time. There may not be a second.
