(Deuteronomy 12:6-7) These verses do not mention being humble, grateful, or content. These are the kind of attitudes we must have to sincerely worship God. An honest and transparent approach is what I believe God wants from us. When we approach Him with the offering of our lives and we desire the blessings of God, we need to come to Him with a humble spirit. We must be grateful for the blessings He has given us. Think about it, He chose you to be His child; there is no greater blessing! Are you grateful for that? Lastly, we need to be content in our circumstances. The gift of contentment is a spiritual weapon that defeats the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life.
I believe these are the three most overlooked character traits and yet three of the most important character traits a Christian can strive to have. They are spiritual disciplines that take time and effort to develop, but they can lead you into the right position and posture as you kneel before the Holy God.
Battle of the Mind: The greatest characteristic of a Christian warrior is love. I look at love as an umbrella that has a lot of other character traits that work in conjunction to achieve this overarching goal. Humility, gratefulness, and contentment are attributes, skills, and disciplines that are load-bearing walls to the house of love. If you take one of these walls out, the integrity of the house is in question. When the storms come and rock that house, will it stand?
Self-Check: If you are constantly bragging about yourself and your accomplishments, then humility may be something that you need to work on. If you catch yourself complaining about anything, gratefulness may be what you should spend time working on. Pray that God will show you the areas in your life that you need to work on. If you are being consumed with lust, contentment is a discipline that you should pray for. All three of these are directly attacked by the three temptations of the enemy. They might all have different deceptions that entice you, but they are all lies of the enemy.
